Proposed City Tree Planting near Atlantis/Arden Forest Commons Area
Glen Allen HOA President Kared Defazio has corresponded with the City Of Bowie
regarding their plans to plant trees in some of the commons areas of our community at
the corner of Arden Forest Lane and Atlantis Drive. The plantings are not expected to
effect the area where we have been holding our Movie Nights. As Karen reports:
"I attended the Stakeholders meeting on December 9th held by Joe Meinert, Director
of Planning and Economic Development for the city, about the planned tree plantings
in the common area. The paving of the Intercounty Connector is taking away acres of
trees in Montgomery County. The state must have a certain number of acres of forests
(or at least trees) and is looking for areas to plant to replace those taken away by
the ICC. Bowie felt that this area might be a good one to include.
All in attendance agreed that this would be a good area for planting with some
qualifications. Concern was expressed that a small portion of the planned planting
would go right up to a resident's property line. Mr. Meinert thought that this small
area could be dropped from the plan. He also mentioned the possibility of a walkway
through the 'forest' and some split rail fencing to delineate the area.
There was some discussion of the type of trees to be planted. They would probably
include about five varieties of trees indigenous to the area. Mr. Meinert indicated
that scientific tests have proved that whips (little twigs such as those on Church
Road) have the best chance of surviving. He said they would plant about 1,000 of
these in that area as opposed to 500 of the next size up in maturity. Concern was
expressed that whips are eye-sores and would take decades to become actual trees.
Preference for a slightly igger tree was expressed. Regardless of the size planted,
the city would have to water them for 2 years after planting.
Mr. Meinert plans to have at least one more stakeholders meeting on this and would
like to establish a working group of residents. If you would like to be on this
working group, contact Sherry Jones of ProCom (sjones@procomgt.com). She will pass
your name on to Mr. Meinert."
